About this position

NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) is advertising a PhD candidate position in synthetic biology and biosynthetic gene cluster expression within the EU-funded AIMARIA project (Accelerating Innovation in Marine AI-Powered Bioprospecting).

The project sits at the interface of molecular biology, microbiology, microbial genetics, biotechnology, bioinformatics, and artificial intelligence. The research focuses on refactoring and heterologous expression of biosynthetic gene clusters, with work on regulatory DNA elements, promoter and 5′ UTR design, microbial host selection, and AI-supported design–build–test–learn workflows. The successful candidate will work with the Department of Biotechnology and Food Science in Trondheim, Norway, and collaborate with partners in the AIMARIA consortium.

Eligibility highlights: a master’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field such as synthetic biology, molecular biology, biotechnology, microbiology, biochemistry, or biochemical engineering; practical lab experience in molecular biology/microbiology/genetic engineering; strong English skills; and a solid academic record (B or better on NTNU’s scale, or equivalent). Master’s students may apply if they complete and document the degree before starting, no later than 2027-01-01.

Funding and terms: full-time PhD appointment for three years; gross salary normally NOK 550,800 per year depending on qualifications and seniority. The position is conditional on external funding.

How to apply: submit the application electronically via Jobbnorge.no only. Include CV, diplomas/certificates, a motivation letter, transcripts, a copy or draft of the master’s thesis, publications if any, three referees, and documentation for any education completed outside Norway. Deadline: 2026-08-09.
