About this position

Binghamton University’s Wagner Polymer & Soft Matter Mechanics Lab is recruiting a PhD student / Graduate Research Assistant for a Spring 2027 start in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science & Engineering Program.

The lab focuses on polymer physics, polymer synthesis, materials characterization, mechanical testing, and multiscale computational mechanics of advanced soft materials, including polymer networks, elastomers, hydrogels, and related systems.

Applicants with experience or strong interest in polymer network mechanics, elastomer/hydrogel synthesis and characterization, rheology, DMA, tensile/compression testing, data analysis, molecular dynamics, finite element analysis, constitutive modeling, or scientific computing tools such as MATLAB, Python, C/C++, LAMMPS, COMSOL, and Abaqus are especially encouraged to apply.

Minimum requirements include a B.S. degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Physics, or a closely related field, plus a strong academic record, research potential, and excellent communication skills. Admission into Binghamton University ME or MSE graduate programs is required.

The position includes a competitive graduate research assistantship with stipend, tuition support, and health insurance, subject to university policies and satisfactory progress.
