About this position

The AI:GeoComm Lab at Aalborg University, part of the ambitious AI:X initiative, is offering a fully funded PhD position in Atmospheric AI Modeling and Forecasting. This interdisciplinary project aims to advance AI research and create real-world impact by integrating artificial intelligence with physics and real-time data to improve weather forecasts and enhance the reliability of communication systems, particularly for Denmark and Greenland.

The AI:GeoComm Lab is a collaboration between the Department of Electronic Systems and the Department of Sustainability and Planning, hosted at the Technical Faculty of IT & Design. The lab leverages changes in wireless signals caused by rain and humidity to learn about atmospheric conditions and inform weather prediction models. The PhD project will focus on developing AI models that fuse real-time satellite communication signals, GNSS-based atmospheric observations, and numerical weather prediction outputs. The research will involve data fusion, feature extraction, and model development using approaches ranging from gradient boosting to deep learning architectures. Benchmark comparisons with operational meteorological models and collaborations with domain experts in geodesy and atmospheric science are integral to the project.

The Geodesy Group at Aalborg University, which hosts the PhD, specializes in satellite-based Earth observation and atmospheric modeling. The group develops in-house satellite, GNSS, and atmospheric products, providing direct access to essential data and expertise. The project is highly interdisciplinary, requiring candidates to develop skills in numerical modeling, AI and machine learning methods, and scientific programming (Python, TensorFlow, scikit-learn).

Applicants must hold a Master's degree and demonstrate motivation to apply and further develop analytical skills in a cross-disciplinary research environment. While a strong background in both AI and domain knowledge is preferred, candidates with expertise in either AI/data science or GNSS-based atmospheric sensing, microwave remote sensing, atmospheric sciences, or geophysics are encouraged to apply. Enrollment as a PhD student at the Technical Doctoral School of IT and Design is required, and the program includes PhD courses (30 ECTS), teaching or knowledge dissemination experience, and an external research stay (3-6 months) at a foreign research institution.

The position is open for appointment from 15 August 2026 or soon thereafter, with a duration of three years. Salary and terms of employment are governed by the collective agreement between the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations and the state (AC collective agreement).
