About this position

PhD opening at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science for a project on superconducting imaging spectrometers for submillimeter-wave cosmology and terahertz astronomy.

The research focuses on next-generation superconducting integral field units (IFUs) based on Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detectors (MKIDs). The goal is to scale up the current single-spaxel DESHIMA 2.0 technology into a multi-pixel IFU with 61 spatial pixels and roughly 3,000 to 15,000 MKIDs on a single 4-inch wafer.

You will work through the full development cycle: detector design, microfabrication, device characterization, and system integration. The project uses world-class facilities such as the Kavli Nanolab, the Else Kooi Laboratory, and SRON cleanroom facilities. The developed IFUs will be integrated into the TIFUUN instrument, a superconducting imaging spectrometer for terahertz astronomy.

Beyond lab work, the position includes commissioning and science verification at the ASTE telescope in the Atacama Desert, Chile. The role is embedded in the Experimental Astronomy group and involves close collaboration with SRON and international partners in Japan.

Requirements include a background in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or Astronomy, experience with cleanroom/device fabrication preferred, and familiarity with the Atacama Desert environment. English proficiency is required according to TU Delft Graduate School standards.

This is a 4-year PhD employment with an initial 1.5-year contract followed by a 2.5-year extension subject to performance. Salary ranges from €3204 to €4051 gross per month, plus 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus. TU Delft also mentions health insurance discounts and a monthly work costs contribution.
