About this position

PhD opportunity at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in thermal runaway of batteries for naval vessels and maritime energy systems.

The project is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Defense and focuses on how to design and use battery energy storage systems on board ships so that thermal runaway is avoided. The research asks how to build safer battery systems for naval vessels, how to model battery thermal behavior and runaway, how to reduce risk through battery chemistry, containment, and cooling, and how to minimize damage if runaway occurs.

The work combines modelling, design, and experimental work, with attention to the ship energy system, battery chemistry, cooling systems, and mechanical construction/containment. The PhD researcher will work closely with national academic and industrial partners, including the Netherlands Defense Academy, and will collaborate with researchers on the NWO-funded projects Maritime Batteries and SEANERGETIC.

The position is based at Delft University of Technology, Department of Maritime & Transport Technology, Group Sustainable Drive and Energy Systems, under the supervision of Henk Polinder.

Eligibility highlights: MSc in electrical power engineering, mechanical engineering, or chemical engineering; interest or expertise in battery system modelling and design; strong English communication skills; proactive and independent working style; ability to interact with stakeholders.

Funding and conditions: 4-year PhD employment in principle, with salary from €3059 to €3881 gross per month, plus holiday allowance and end-of-year bonus. TU Delft also mentions health insurance discounts and a monthly work costs contribution.

Application deadline: 31 August 2026. Apply online only and upload a cover letter and CV with publications. If shortlisted, you may be asked for up to three referees.
