About this position
This fully funded PhD position at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) is part of the National Growth Fund (NGF) project “Groeien met Groen Staal” (GGS), focusing on advancing sustainable and climate-neutral steel production. The research aims to develop an advanced particle-based modelling framework to support the design and optimisation of scrap handling systems for continuous furnace infeed, specifically targeting Electric Arc Furnaces (EAFs).
The project will investigate how key scrap characteristics—such as size, shape, density, and material heterogeneity—interact with handling and transport systems, discharging equipment like vibratory feeders, and industrial loading strategies used in scrap yards. You will develop and validate a simulation model to capture the flow and behaviour of steel scrap throughout handling, transport, and furnace infeed processes, integrating real industrial data from Tata Steel Netherlands. The research will analyse the influence of different scrap recipes and loading strategies on process performance, movement, and segregation behaviour, aiming to optimise discharge sequences for improved operational efficiency, reduced energy consumption, and minimised wear. Practical recommendations will be developed for implementation in industrial EAF operations.
You will join the Machines & Materials Interactions section within the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at TU Delft, which specialises in designing next-generation machines for the transportation domain, focusing on their interactions with cargo, materials, and environments. The section combines experimental testing and computational modelling, collaborating with national and international experts across industry and academia. The successful candidate will be supervised by Prof.dr.ir. Dingena Schott and Dr.ir. Yusong Pang, and will have opportunities to collaborate with GGS consortium partners.
Applicants must hold an MSc degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or a related field. Experience with Discrete Element Method or other particle-based methods is required, and preference is given to candidates with experimental and/or scrap characterisation experience. Industry-related research affinity, excellent English communication skills, and a collaborative mindset are essential. English proficiency suitable for participation in English-taught Doctoral Education courses and scientific writing is required.
The position offers a 4-year employment contract (initial 1.5 years with progress assessment, followed by 2.5 years upon satisfactory performance). Salary ranges from €3059 to €3881 gross per month, plus 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus.
