This project, CHEMBARIDA, focuses on effective chemical barriers against rising damp in buildings. The research combines building physics, civil engineering, materials science, chemical engineering, and moisture transport modelling to understand how damp-proofing products spread through porous building materials, what reactions occur in pore networks, and why field performance can differ from laboratory results.
You will use a multiscale approach involving advanced laboratory experimentation, in-situ testing on masonry structures, and validation across scales from building materials to full-scale constructions. A key outcome is the development and validation of a new laboratory testing protocol for assessing damp-proofing products within practical timeframes.
The PhD is supervised by Dr. Barbara Lubelli and Prof. Dr. Ir. Martin Tenpierik. Part of the work will take place at The Green Village, TU Delft’s living lab for sustainable innovation, and the project is carried out in collaboration with the University of Amsterdam and external partners including Buildwise, Safeguard Europe, the Central Government Real Estate Agency, and the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands.
Eligibility highlights: a Master’s degree in Engineering, Materials Science, Building Physics, or a related field; hands-on lab experience; knowledge of moisture transport modelling in porous materials; experimental skills for building materials; strong English; and good teamwork/communication skills. Basic organic chemistry knowledge and prior research experience are advantages.
Funding: 4-year doctoral employment, salary €3059–€3881 gross per month, plus holiday allowance and end-of-year bonus. TU Delft also mentions health insurance discounts and a monthly work costs contribution.
