About this position

Munster Technological University’s CAPPA Centre in Cork, Ireland is offering a fully funded PhD position in advanced integrated lasers for biophotonics applications. The project sits within the Nanophotonics group at CAPPA and involves close collaboration with researchers at Tyndall National Institute, including the Biophotonics team and the Heterogeneous Integration team.

The PhD is funded through Taighde Éireann (Research Ireland)’s Rinn Semiconductors Research Centre and is part of the CARE (Digital Healthcare) theme. The research focus is the design of transfer-printable tunable narrow-linewidth laser sources for interferometric near-infrared spectroscopy (iNIRS), supporting a wearable biomarker sensing platform for neonatal care. The project aims to develop the light engine for a compact, low-power, wearable iNIRS system with clinical demonstration planned in neonatal intensive care units.

The successful candidate will work on transfer-printable tunable narrow-linewidth lasers at 760 nm and 935 nm with a 2 nm tuning range, along with coupling schemes to interface efficiently with the iNIRS photonic integrated circuit. The research includes theoretical and experimental work on laser design, source coupling, grating couplers and metasurface interfaces, and characterisation of linewidth, sweep speed, coupling efficiency, and coherence parameters. The project also includes tailored source designs for iNIRS and speckle contrast optical spectroscopy (SCOS) applications.

Applicants should have a strong background in physics, electrical engineering, photonics, optics, or a related discipline. A first or upper second-class honours degree is required, and a Master’s degree is desirable; exceptional candidates with a first-class honours bachelor’s degree may also be considered. Strong laboratory skills, an interest in laser physics and photonic integration, fluency in English, and good communication skills are important. Experience with tunable narrow-linewidth lasers, transfer printing, heterogeneous integration, and optical sensing methods will be advantageous.

Funding includes a tax-free stipend of €25,000 per year and university fees covered up to €5,500 per year. Additional benefits include access to CAPPA and Tyndall fabrication and characterisation facilities, collaboration with industry and clinical partners, and a personal career development plan. Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
