About this position

NHH Norwegian School of Economics is advertising 2 PhD Research Scholar positions in the Department of Economics in Bergen, Norway. The PhD specialisation welcomes candidates in all fields of economics, with a strong research environment and supervision resources across the department’s main groups: FAIR (experimental research on fairness, inequality and rationality), MICRO, and MARSCe (macro, risk and sustainability).

The programme is four years and fully funded. It includes an intensive course component, research training, relevant work experience, and 25% teaching assistance. Scholars receive an annual salary of NOK 570,000 from August 2027, with possible higher pay for especially strong candidates, plus annual adjustment, research travel funds, conference support, and research-stay funding. The position also comes with Norwegian public benefits such as health care and pension savings.

Applicants should normally hold a five-year MSc degree in Economics and Business Administration or a comparable degree, with an average grade of at least B (4.0) in the Norwegian system. The department requires evidence of academic ability and English proficiency unless exempt. Accepted tests include GMAT or GRE for academic skills and TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE Academic for English. Exemptions apply in some cases, including for holders of qualifying Nordic master’s degrees and certain native English speakers.

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
