About this position

Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań is inviting applications for one NCN scientific scholarship within the SONATA 21 project no. 2025/59/D/HS6/03333, Personalizing Affective Images with Generative Artificial Intelligence, led by Maciej Behnke, PhD, DSc. The scholarship is hosted by the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy and the Cognitive Neuroscience Centre at Adam Mickiewicz University, with the project framed around research on AI models adapted to affective tasks.

The successful candidate will work on prompting strategies, parameter-efficient fine-tuning methods such as PEFT/LoRA, explainability approaches including saliency maps, and the diagnosis of model failures, biases, and miscalibration. The role also includes systematic experimentation to improve the accuracy, robustness, and interpretability of an affective expert-type model, as well as data analysis, code and results documentation, open research materials, and scientific publication support.

This is a PhD-student scholarship opportunity rather than a postdoctoral or master’s opening. Applicants must hold PhD student status at a doctoral school when the project begins, must not already hold a doctoral degree, and must satisfy the eligibility rules of the NCN regulations. The ideal background includes computer science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer vision, or a related discipline, together with experience in Python, machine-learning libraries, deep learning, affective computing, reproducible research, and data analysis. Very good English is required; Polish and English language proficiency are listed in the call.

The scholarship amount is PLN 3,000 per month for 36 months, starting 1 September 2026. One scholarship is available. The application deadline is 15 August 2026 at 23:59 CEST, and the competition will be decided by 20 August 2026. Shortlisted candidates may be invited for interview, where competence to carry out the project tasks will be assessed alongside scientific output and research achievements.

Applications should be submitted by email to macbeh@amu.edu.pl with the subject line “SONATA 21 - PhD scholarship”. Required documents include a cover letter, CV, proof of required applicant status, a list of publications or other achievements if applicable, and signed consent for personal-data processing.

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.

Please submit your application including a cover letter, CV, academic transcripts, and contact information for two references. Applications should be sent via the online portal before the deadline.
