About this position

Monash University Malaysia is advertising a PhD project under the Global Excellence and Mobility Scholarship (GEMS 2026) on AI-driven extracellular vesicle and microRNA profiling for precision diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease.

This interdisciplinary project combines artificial intelligence, machine learning, bioinformatics, data science, applied statistics, health informatics, medical statistics, molecular biology, and neuroscience. The research aims to analyse blood samples, isolate extracellular vesicles (EVs), profile surface ligands and microRNAs, and build ML models for biomarker discovery, classification, and prediction of Alzheimer’s disease progression. It also includes analysis of large EV/exosome datasets to identify useful ligand-cargo combinations and therapeutic design strategies.

The project sits within Monash University Malaysia’s Graduate Research Thematic Cluster, From Biomarkers to Therapeutics: An Integrated Approach to Alzheimer’s Disease. The supervisor listed is Dr Huey Fang Ong at Monash University Malaysia.

Funding: The scholarship is competition-funded through GEMS and supports regional mobility. Successful recipients receive an immersive year in Monash University Australia, Monash University Indonesia, or the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay for up to 9 months, plus access to Monash’s global research network and infrastructure.

Eligibility highlights: Preference is given to Malaysian citizens. Suitable backgrounds include Bioinformatics, Data Science, Computer Science, Digital Health, Applied AI, or related fields. Preferred experience includes machine learning development, bioinformatics/pathway-network analysis, neurodegenerative disease research, and wet-lab skills. Applicants must meet the English language requirements and have at least First Class Honours (H1) or equivalent recognised by Monash University Malaysia.

How to apply: Contact the main supervisor first with your academic background and achievements to assess fit. If suitable, submit your application via the GEMS application process and ensure you select the same advertised research topic. Review the application submission guide before applying.

Location: Subang Jaya, Malaysia.
