About this position
Monash University Malaysia is advertising a PhD Global Excellence and Mobility Scholarship (GEMS 2026) project on the mechanisms and therapeutic potential of psychedelic compounds in patient-derived neural models.
This PhD sits within the MAP-Neuro thematic cluster: Diverse hiPSC Models, AI Analytics & Mechanism-Guided Therapeutics. The project investigates compounds such as MDMA and psilocybin in hiPSC-derived neurons and organoids, using high-content imaging to study synaptic plasticity, connectivity, signalling changes, response biomarkers, and candidate dosing windows. The work is preclinical and translational, with relevance to future pilot clinical trials and mental health research.
Relevant study areas include neuroscience, pharmacology, cell biology, molecular biology, bioinformatics, and artificial intelligence. The project also connects wet-lab and computational research across Malaysia and Australia, and mentions collaboration with Monash University’s wider global network.
The ideal candidate should have a strong background in neuroscience, stem cell biology, or bioinformatics, with practical experience in cell culture, molecular techniques, or imaging. Interest in integrative analysis of genomics and proteomics data is highlighted, along with motivation to study neurodevelopmental disorders such as schizophrenia and autism. Preferred degrees include neuroscience, biotechnology, biomedical science, or bioinformatics.
Funding is provided through the Global Excellence and Mobility Scholarship (GEMS), funded by Monash University Malaysia. The scholarship includes an immersive year in Monash University Australia, Monash University Indonesia, or the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay for up to 9 months, plus access to Monash’s global research infrastructure during candidature.
Eligibility notes mention a minimum of First Class Honours (H1) or equivalent recognised by Monash University Malaysia, together with English language requirements. Applicants are advised to first contact the main supervisor, Assoc. Professor Anne Yee, with their academic background and achievements to assess fit, then submit an application via the project page and select GEMS.
Location: Subang Jaya, Malaysia.
